Beta Reading or Developmental Editing?

What's the difference between Beta Reading and Developmental Editing?

is meant to give you an idea of the issues a reader might encounter upon reading your book. A beta reader points out elements that takes them out of the story or where it doesn't make sense. These can be anything from plot problems, to character inconsistencies to pacing issues and more. Beta Reading is great for spotting story problems, but does not tell you how to fix them.

focuses on big picture issues. This does NOT include grammar, copyediting, or proofreading. This may include plot, structure, pacing and/or character motivations. A developmental editor looks deeper into the underlying story structure in order to offer suggestions for problems.
